Who I Am
Psychotherapy is 120 years old, antidepressants came along sixty years ago. Isn’t it time for a new way to beat depression?
I’ve started and run a string of my own businesses for most of my working life. After fighting my own battles with depression, I resolved in 2007 to focus my efforts wholeheartedly on finding innovative ways to tackle mental wellbeing. I’m not a doctor or therapist, but in some respects I’ve become an ‘expert patient’, and am also convinced that finding ways to beat the looming ogre of mental ill-health is going to involve some pretty serious out-of-the-box thinking. I began in 2007 by inventing Moodscope, an innovative tool that enables people to measure and track their mood every day, sharing their results with friends if they choose. For some, this process alone can in and of itself lift mood. Others, however, are likely to need advice about what they can do to beat the blues, and it’s in this field that I’ll be working, having moved on from Moodscope in May 2013.

What I Do
I was an ad man for the first fifteen years of my career, running my own London advertising agency with big blue-chip clients. This is where I honed my creative skills, learning to write persuasively, among other things. It’s also where I learned to approach problems from unusual angles, finding solutions in places where others might not have thought of looking. Perhaps it’s partly this experience which has equipped me to look at mental health in novel ways. Moodscope turned a card game into a mood-tracking system. Next to come out of the box? Well, let’s just say I’ve some new ideas which are fairly sure to have people talking. While I’m working on these new initiatives, I’m also available for consultancy and speaking gigs. If this may be of interest to you, please drop me a line via the email address at the foot of the page and let’s talk.
First out of the starting blocks from me is my new book ‘Mood Nudges’ scheduled for coming publication. With 366 daily affirmations (it’s designed to work in leap years as well as those without a February 29th) you’ll have a brief written passage to start your day with a little mood-boost. The writing first appeared as the daily messages I wrote in the form of emails to Moodscope’s members, and it was at the request of many readers that I’ve gathered them together in book form. I’ll be taking pre-orders for ‘Mood Nudges’ in the very near future, with a special treat in store for those who reserve a copy—not only will you receive a signed first edition, but your name will also appear in the Dedications section.
